About JJ's Jay-Care
Background Info
My family adopted our first dog when I was 3 years old. Jay was 1 year old when he came to his forever home. We grew up together and were inseparable. His time came when he was 18, and despite his long-lived happy life, his absence left me with the largest void in my heart I had ever experienced.
When COVID-19 swept the world into isolation, I had the opportunity to take a puppy into my heart and raise him with love and care. I named him Jasper Jay; Jay is his namesake. My darling Westie has so many qualities that Jay, the Heinz-47 mut, had possessed. It warms my heart to see Jay in my own pup each day. Jasper has been trained to be an obedient, independent, and courageous dog. His sweetness and playfullness is all his own!
Experience
I have been lucky to be around dogs my whole life. At every opportunity, I would care for my friend's and family's pets. Since beginning JJ's Jay-Care in April 2023, I have had the incredible oppportunity to work with a variety of pets and breeds including:
Pomeranian, Golden Irish Retriver, Golden Retriever, Yorkshire Terrier, English Setter, Toy Poodle, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Nova Scotia Duck-Tolling Retriever, Beagle Mix, Bernese Mountain Dog, Black Lab, Dachshund, PitBull Mix, Basset Hound Mix, Cardigan Welsh Corgi Mix, English Cocker Spaniel, Treeing Walker Coonhound, Cockapoo, Havanese, and Chocolate Lab.
I hope to work with all breeds of dogs and gain an appreciation for their unique characteristics and behavious.
Training
Jasper Jay was raised during COVID-19 isolation. This comprimised his socialization as a puppy which is critical for a dog's learning. Once restrictions had lifted, Jasper and I attended an obedience training course. This allowed us to learn appropriate walking techniques and behaviours. After we moved from Newfoundland to Nova Scotia, Jasper and I attended a Basic Life Skills training course. This taught us how to get and maintain engagement, achieve loose-leash walking, and it increased my understanding of the criticality of timing with regards to rewards/treats.
